Words to Live By
I would like all my students to come into this semester with a positive outlook. There is no reason to worry about not knowing enough about science or how good/bad you think you are. That is why I am here. Come to class and always be greeted with a smile. :)
I want to see all of my students learn, add on to or develop new skills and have a better understanding of concepts in science. With out knowledge we are ignorant to the topic. So, if this class needs to be looked at as a challenge, so be it. Take it on with determination for success.
During class time you will see me wandering without cause around the room. I want to see how each student is progressing and how they get from start to finish. So, be waiting for that 'eyes on the back' feeling. Take notice of how one's action reflects their outcome in the classroom. If students exhibit good behavior and are on task, they will be praised.
This is important information to understand, because I will be recording and counting participation. During the first few weeks I will discuss the students progress. At the end of the week we will review the results and decide if further guidance is needed. I want everyone to understand what is being expected and to know if there is an issue to be confronted.
Participation Criteria
1. Was the student in class or late?
2. Did the student take notes or document important information?
3. Was the student active during discussion or activity?
4. Did I need to call attention to any form of misconduct?

It Pays Off
Participation is one of the varying forms of tracking I will do to assure success. Other things I would be looking for is cooperation between peers. I expect all of my students to follow the Rules of my classroom, which means everyone is to be treated with respect. Formal and written assessment will be use to assure we are reaching our goals.
All of that seems like a lot of work. I am here to provide enthusiasm, encouragement and support through this whole thing. Any time you have a question or issue with the class, please come see me. There are no intentions to see anyone fail or do poorly. I will be consistently handing out positive feedback and reward students for their efforts.
For those students that do not feel they will be consistently involved in class, I can only say that it is your grade, your future and that you will sound pretty silly when you accidentally dye your new white shirt blue from you also new jeans. Students that do not actively participate will have a plan created to change or modify how class time is spent. Poorly done or late work is only going to reflect negatively on grades.
I would hope it is safe to say that good conduct will receive praise and any that is bad will be addressed personally. For most instances, we will be able to develop consequence for the action and a plan to prevent repetition.

Individual Needs
I understand that all of my students will be coming from different locations, homes and backgrounds. I also realize that not all of my students will have developed at the same pace and have different ways they learn. Each student will be evaluated on a personal level and set goals that will exceed expected effort, but not surpass ability. There will be instructional strategies to meet the needs of the visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.
The subject matter we will be covering is directly related to all of us. We should be able to understand how the Earth operates, how our bodies react to infection and that there are daily chemical reactions we use.
